Denver AHEPA Wins 2008 AHEPA Basketball Tournament
May 2 - 4, 2008
The 60th Annual AHEPA ‘Van Nomikos’ National Basketball Tournament was held May 2 – 4, 2008 at the site of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New Rochelle, New York. Ten teams participated in the tournament from the US and Canada, hosted by the AHEPA Evzone Chapter 405.
Denver AHEPA was represented by two teams, while the Toronto chapter sponsored a team in the tournament for the first time. Other teams that participated, included Lynn MA, Garden City NY, Queens NY, Middlesex NJ, Manhattan, Whitestone NY, and New Rochelle, NY.
The final games on Sunday featured the top teams in the tournament. Denver, Garden City and Brooklyn survived to play on Sunday in the final rounds.
Solid play from Aki Palmer, Dimitrios Dadiotis and Michael Kelly ensured the victory for Denver. This is the third time in four years Denver has won the AHEPA tournament. Dimitrios and Michael earned All-Star honors while Aki Palmer won MVP honors of the tournament, averaging 22 points and 5 three pointers per game but more importantly orchestrated the offense to victory.
